To facilitate a better experience when creating layouts, We’ve recently updated the way that error messages are displayed when using the layout editor.
When there is an error with a position, that position will be highlighted in red. The most common error that happens when creating a layout is duplicate position names, so we'll use that as an example here:

If there is a problem with a field for a position, it will be displayed in the right sidebar:
